Every year, the Cannes Film Festival brings together film industry professionals to preview and release films from around the world. The event is highly acclaimed, and thus so is the fashion. In honor of the festival beginning this past Tuesday, we have chosen some of our favorite looks that graced the Cannes carpets throughout the years.
PRINCESS DIANA, 1987
Princess Diana is well-known for her fashion. To the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, she wore a strapless baby blue Catherine Walker gown with a scarf draped behind her. The simplistic look was completed with some blue jewels and silver heels.
Madonna wowed the press and public at the release of “In Bed with Madonna” (originally titled “Truth or Dare”) when she took off her silk robe to reveal an iconic white Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra and shorts. The outfit fits the retitle of the film quite well, even her hair having a polished curlers-in-hair look about it.
MILLA JOVOVICH, 1997
To the premiere of her movie, “The Fifth Element”, Milla Jovovich wore an embroidered John Galliano two piece. The bra features thick straps and draped chest jewelry, and the skirt drapes around her waist, finished with beaded tassels.
KATE MOSS, 1997
Kate Moss always stuns carpets with her effortless beauty and styling. In 1997, she attended the festival with her then-boyfriend Johnny Depp. She wore a simple white gown with a cream and blue embroidered kimono thrown over, and accessorized the look with dainty diamonds and a subtle red lip.
Known for her eccentric yet polished style, Bjork stunned the 2000 carpet for the screening of “Dancer in the Dark” in a pink origami-esque dress. She won the Best Actress Award for her performance in the film.
PARIS HILTON, 2001
Whenever Paris Hilton steps out into the public, she is usually dressed head to toe in diamonds, pink, a polished suit (recently), or some variety similar. Going to Cannes Film Festival was no exception, and in 2001 she wore a black halter gown with a low open back. On the dress are crystal-embroidered signatures. She accessorized with diamonds and an embellished hat.
Dressed in white head to toe, Rihanna walked the 2017 carpet knowing she is that girl. The classic cut of this Dior gown was modernized with a long white jacket and small sunglasses.
KIKO MIZUHARA, 2019
Kiko Mizuhara resembled a petaled flower in this Dior Couture gown in 2019. The construction and colour of this dress had Kiko looking so classic yet fresh.
BELLA HADID, 2021
Bella Hadid caused a frenzy when she wore Schiaparelli to the festival in 2021. The black gown, tailored with a tight waist and rounded shoulders, served as a perfect canvas for the shaped gold neck and chest piece. The glam and other accessories were kept simple, so as to not take away from it.
LORI HARVEY, 2022
Although the 2022 Cannes Film Festival is still in full swing with more red carpets to come, we could not not include Lori Harvey in Alexandre Vauthier. The soft yellow gown features layers upon layers of organza and is finished with a large beaded brooch on the waist. Her simple hair allows for her layered diamond necklace to shine.
