NORDIC'S FESTIVE INSIGHT TO BURBERRY

For us, there’s one brand that says Christmas above all else. Sure, we love a Missoni knit to keep us cozy or a Moncler puffa to keep out the cold; but it’s Burberry that really puts us in a festive mood. Imagine the scene: Bond Street Christmas lights, light smattering of snow, a mulled wine for good measure as you traipse round hunting for the perfect gift. What better way to complete the image than to be wrapped up in a Burberry overcoat and scarf?
Sure, this year most of your Crimbo shopping is probably happening online. But rather than deepen Mr Bezos’s pockets further why not spread a little Xmas cheer with that classic check. With that in mind, we thought we’d provide a little history into Burberry’s most recognised trademark.
It’s a chicken and egg question – trench or check? Thomas Burberry founded his brand in 1856, he invented a material called garbardine which was used to create protective, durable clothing adopted by numerous explorers. The business grew from strength to strength gaining the first of its royal warrants, this one for tailoring, in 1919. The trench as we know it, was born in the First World War – a functional design for British soldiers. The garment, now a wardrobe staple for many quite literally got its name “Trench Coat” because of this. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that the check was introduced as a trench lining, becoming a registered trademark in 1921.
The scarf was allegedly a happy accident. In 1967, the Paris store manager was looking to add colour to a window display of trench coats – so turned the hems of some of the jacket’s outwards so the check was visible. Customer’s loved the look and were soon seeking out merchandise with the now iconic check. The brand initially made umbrella’s, which immediately sold out before creating the much-loved cashmere scarves.
Burberry is a brand steeped in history, one deeply intwined with so many key events over the past century and a half. The brand continues to push boundaries we can’t help but remain nostalgic for one of fashions most recognisable prints as we wrap up warm for everyone’s favourite time of year.
