VERSACE FALL 1992 MISS S&M READY-TO-WEAR COLLECTION
In light of the 2022 Grammy Awards, we could not help but take note of some eye-catching red carpet looks. A notable fashion moment we have been drooling over is Dua Lipa, who resembled a 1993 Met Gala Donatella Versace, dressed in a black floor length bondage gown adorned with chunky gold jewelry and waist-length bleach blonde hair.
The gown was originally worn by Christy Turlington in Gianni Versace’s Fall/Winter 1992 Runway Collection, titled “Miss S&M”. The collection caused quite a stir when it hit the runway due to its clear theme of sex throughout, but it was arguably one of the late designer’s most iconic.

The collection featured some tame silhouettes that could be boldly worn to the office, but a great majority of the collection was dripping in bondage, leather, and heavy gold hardware, which intentionally sexualized the models while also giving them a sort of feminine strength and power. The former made fashion critics question the wearability and marketability of the collection, but these critiques were quickly put to rest when celebrities began wearing looks and iterations of looks from the runway to events and on red carpets.
Cindy Crawford wore the same gown as Turlington and Lipa to the 1992 MTV Awards, and her daughter Kaia Gerber attended her 18th birthday party in a similar style. Other memorable celebrities seen wearing looks from the 1992 collection are Beyonce for a 2011 Complex Magazine photoshoot, Kim Kardashian to a 2018 Versace Met Gala after party, and Lady Gaga to a Palazzo Versace Party in 2012.
