Y2K JOHN GALLIANO AT NORDIC POETRY

Y2K JOHN GALLIANO AT NORDIC POETRY

Nordic Poetry’s founder, Ameli Lindgren, has found herself battling an obsession that many of you may find relatable- the designer and storytelling genius John Galliano. His archive of work has recently drawn attention  due to the growing appreciation for all things Y2K, and the 2000’s is an era where Galliano made an undeniable impact on the world of fashion both through his own label and as creative director at Dior. Whether it’s logomania or red carpet elegance, Galliano is synonymous with both haute couture and iconic celebrity street style.  In this post we’ll be covering two of our favourite pieces and how to get your hands on your very own, straight from Nordic Poetry.

There is a strong likelihood that you are familiar with the newspaper print trend. Well, truth is, this isn’t so much a trend than a print that has been solidified into modern culture partly through the designs of John Galliano. Though previous versions exists, such as Elsa Schiaparelli’s 1935 design and Twiggy’s 60s dress, it was Galliano for Dior that helped to reinstate its place into the modern mainstream. The ‘Christian Dior Daily’ first appeared at the turn of the millennium in the controversial ‘boho chic’ collection presented in January 2000. Whilst the idea of using the homeless as inspiration caused an uproar amongst critics, Carrie Bradshaw’s appearance in bias cut newspaper dress during episode 17, season 3 of Sex and the City, made the print instantly desirable. Later that year, Galliano reshaped the design into a sign of luxury as it reappeared in Dior’s Fall ready-to-wear show amongst chiffon, mink and ostrich feather. The success of this design led to the creation of the Galliano Gazette which has been consistent feature in Galliano’s own ready to wear label since spring 2001. More recently Kim Kardashian wore a Dior Daily skirt, and the Galliano Gazette has been seen on Kendall Jenner, Elsa Hosk and Rita Ora.

If you’re looking for a little more colour,  our cropped Dior cropped biker vest might be right for you. Filtering down from a celebration of cultural amalgamation in Dior’s Fall 2003 Couture show, Rasta Mania pieces demonstrate the designers appreciation for international influence and cross referencing mastery. While some garments from this collection are identifiable through a brown Dior monogram print and the application of contrasting red, yellow and green piping and canvas trims, others are covered entirely in bold collage prints of Bob Marley and other Rasta imagery. Originally donned throughout 2003 and 2004 by stars such as Gwen Stafani in a halter neck dress or and Missy Elliot in a trench coat, more recently paparazzi have snapped tank tops on Bella Hadid and  bikinis on Kourtney Kardashian. The vibrant colour palette and uplifting soundtrack of reggae make pieces from this collection perfect for taking us through the summer season.
